National flag on the ramparts of Fort St George will be hoisted by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at 8.30 am on 15 August. The Chief Minister after delivering Independence Day speech would distribute the Kalpana Chawla award for courageous and daring actions and awards to persons who have done exemplary service to the physically challenged. The State government has selected the following women for the Kalpana Chawla Award .N. Rajamaheswari, Professor and Head of the Department of Uro-gynaecology, Government Kasturba Gandhi, Triplicane, is the first uro-gynaecologist in India to have established a department of uro-gynaecology. Rajalakshmi of Usilampatti, affected by polio, represented India in a sports meets for the differently abled. Dr. Pushpanjali of Thirukkalukkundram, is the mother of Hithendran, whose organs were harvested after he died in an accident. The Chief Secretary would receive Karunanidhi at 8.25 am, following which the General Officer Commanding, Andhra, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala Area; the Naval Officer in-charge, Chennai; the Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station, Tambaram, Commander, Coast Guard (East), the Director General of Police, the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) and the Commissioner of Police, Chennai, would be introduced to the Chief Minister.
