Greenpeace India recently launched a unique campaign against the entry of the BT brinjal. It plans to create the world’s biggest baingan bharta, the tasty brinjal dish cooked in our capital city to make a record and persuade Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh to protect the Indian brinjal. For this, the NGO has come up with a website where one has to sign a petition and contribute a brinjal. Throwing more light on the campaign, Rajesh Krishna of Greenpeace said , “This initiative was basically to get people involved in the campaign against BT brinjal and we created this concept. To our surprise, within two days after the launch, the registrations crossed more than 10,000.We will be cooking the dish on a large scale, which is slated for February 13.” Greenpeace also plans to rope in top chefs from the country to cook the dish. Tara Rhine of AFI Madras is an also a campaigner. She says, “I want people to fight for this cause. They should understand the drawbacks of genetically modified crops. When we have genuinely nutritious crops here, why should we go in for fake ones?” she says.
